I have just uploaded some Tekki Shodan applications to shotokan unleashed. Classical applications (as the moves are performed in the kata), along with the self defence versions of the same moves.
kata applications is a topic that causes much discussion and debate, especially in todays Shotokan Karate circles.
A lot of senior Shotokan Japanese sensei place little importance on kata application, but a lot of non Japanese sensei do. Why this is the case, is another topic of discussion all on its own.
Anyway, back to the applications for Tekki Shodan. Please note, when I mention the ‘performance’ of the kata, I don’t simply mean the ‘does it look good’ aspect of the kata, although saying that, we all want to improve that side of our kata.
Why classical kata applications? Well, I believe it enhances the performance of the kata on every level. Sadly, a lot of Shotokan Karateka simply go through the kata like a dance, focusing more on the ‘does it look good’ mentality, than the fighting spirit, attitude and feeling. Why self defence kata applications? Obviously, most karateka cannot make the actual kata moves work in a real situation. I know there are exceptions, but lets not base our training on the exceptions. I also believe this type of training, once again enhances everything in the performance of the kata and also gives an insight into techniques that work in a real self defence situation.
So I believe kata applications can only have a positive effect on karate training. It’s also extremely interesting to put meaning to the moves of the kata.
Here are two videos, first one, self defence applications, second one, classical applications (for the second one follow the link because it's not on youtube).
