A Few Questions
2 Nov 2008
Every now and then, some of our members like to unleash their karate on each other, full contact, no pads. I know its not for everyone and we try and match the karateka with people of similar age, ability, size and strength.
I'm no hero and I know my position in the karate worlds pecking order, so please don't think I'm on a macho trip, I believe every dojo should work in a controlled way, but every now and then....................
There is a BIG difference between controlled kumite in the dojo and a karateka who's trying to knock you down! And then another big difference between a knockdown karateka in the dojo and a thug in the street who doesn't care if you live or die in their always brutal attack!
I wonder how many karateka can answer these questions correctly.
Questions in no particular order ~
1. If you get knocked down, can you get straight back up?
2. If you had a serious wound (maybe a knife), could you carry on until the jobs done?
3. Can you do what's necessary, or would you stop too soon?
4. How strong are you mentally?
5. Can you sense danger?
6. Do you attract danger?
7. If necessary, do you have the ability to diffuse a potentially dangerous situation?
8. Can you take a hard blow and carry on like nothing has happened?
9. Would you lose your temper?
An example would be question 1. Question ~ 1. If you get knocked down, can you get straight back up? The answer should always be YES! Not, it depends how hard they hit me, or maybe I slip.
Below is a classic quote from the boxing champion Jack Dempsey.
